Tailored Training
& Coaching
for Life-Sciences
and Biomedical Research Institutions
Shaping resilient science leaders who care as much about research success as they do about mental health and wellbeing.
Why Work With Us?
We train and coach PhD candidates, postdocs, and research group leaders in mental and emotional resilience, energy management, and self-leadership. By bridging neuroscience-backed tools with mind-body awareness, we help institutions build thriving research cultures where scientific excellence coexists with human skills.
If you want your scientists to achieve the best research results and show up from a place of self-awareness, presence, and resilience, let’s talk!
THE CHALLENGE
Scientists are rarely taught how to manage pressure and people.
Data from the Wellcome Trust Report “What Researchers Think About the Culture They Work In” (2020) makes the scale of the problem clear:
78%
of researchers state that high pressure is a defining feature of their academic working environment.
34%
of scientists have sought or considered seeking professional help for anxiety or depression during their research career.
11%
of researchers feel that their institutional leadership successfully creates a healthy working environment.
The pressure to publish, ultra-competitive grant cycles, funding shortages, and career progression uncertainty all take a toll, on scientists’ mental health state, particularly on those who lack the tools to navigate it with awareness.
Our Approach and Impact
Transforming Research Culture From the Inside Out
We believe in shaping a thriving research culture where everyone cares for each other’s wellbeing as much as for research success. That means helping people change, from theory to practice, from learning concepts to changing habits and behaviours.
Because culture is what people do and how they do it, not what a report or set of rules says.
Here’s the shift we help institutions make:
Current Academic Reality
Imposter Syndrome & Burnout: Long hours, chronic stress, creative paralysis, and exhaustion.
Siloed & Reactive Leadership: Group leaders managing through pressure or hyper-criticism, without formal leadership training.
Energy Depletion: PhDs and postdocs struggling with boundaries, sacrificing personal health, and treating rest as a luxury.
High Attrition: Brilliant minds leaving science, not from lack of talent, but from mental health strain and poor mentorship.
The Resilient Research Culture
Self-Awareness and Resilience: Researchers develop higher self-awareness and self-trust. They have tools to handle failure, long term projects, and rejection (failed grants/paper submissions) without burning out.
Empathetic Self-Leadership: Group leaders lead with presence, self-awareness, empathy, and open communication.
Sustainable Energy Management: Scientists are able to set boundaries and create habits that improve both wellbeing and work output.
Talent Development: A culture that protects funding and supports careers, not just projects.
We don't offer generic corporate wellness seminars that leave people to navigate their challenges alone.
What sets our work apart:
Insiders' Perspective
A deep and experienced-based understanding of the pressures and hierarchies of biomedical and life sciences research.
Neuroscience-Backed Approach
of scientists have sought or considered seeking professional help for anxiety or depression during their research career.
Human-centred guidance
Lighthearted enthusiasm, calm presence, and real accountability, in a safe environment.
This isn't just a wellness initiative.
It protects your institution's funding, reputation, and outputs.
Evidence-based mental health and resilience training typically yields returns of 4 to 5:1, largely through reduced absenteeism, presenteeism, and staff turnover (Deloitte UK).
In practical terms, that looks like:
Protected Grant Funding
Teams stay stable, focused, and on track for major deadlines, even under pressure.
Lower Attrition Costs
Replacing a specialised researcher can cost 1.5-2x their annual salary in recruitment and lost productivity (SHRM, Gallup); retaining talent protects that investment and preserves institutional knowledge.
A Magnet Culture
Institutions that visibly prioritise their people's humanity attract the researchers who want to stay.
For your research staff, this translates into:
Sharper focus under pressure,
Healthier lab dynamics with less friction,
And a sustainable pace that protects both the science and the people doing it.
We work with research institutions who want scientific excellence and human wellbeing to grow together, not compete.
Where rigor doesn't come at the cost of the people producing it.
If you're building a culture where your researchers can do world-class work and feel well while doing it, we'd love to talk!

MEET YOUR COACH & trainer
Hello! I’m Ana, the founder of Fire and Flow.
I spent over 15 years in international research environments across Portugal, the UK, and Sweden, including two post-doc positions at the University of Cambridge and Karolinska Institute.
I always felt the responsibility of performing at my best but I also had the awareness to see my wellbeing as something non-negotiable.
As a researcher, I learned firsthand that I did my best work when I felt well.
For that, I set firm boundaries around my working hours, protected my personal life, and cultivated multiple hobbies, especially when work demands were high. But I won’t pretend it was easy; I still questioned myself at times if I was a “good enough scientist” as I often felt guilty for not working so many hours as many people around me”.
I was quite lucky to work with a group leader who was able to nurture and empower a thriving, high-performing team without pressure. This made me confirm that we can aim high without burning out. We were all so happy in his group and felt like a real team!
But, while I lived this, I saw many talented peers suffer and eventually leave research due to chronic stress, lack of self-leadership skills, and a shortage of healthy role models.
Seeing that gap is part of why I now work directly with institutions, not only individuals, because a single supportive leader changed everything for me.
My wish that more scientists can work in the same kind of supportive and empowering culture, where they can grow personally and professionally, in harmony with themselves, is what guides the work I do.
Kind Words from Institutions
We create highly practical and immersive experiences
Holding a safe space
We establish a non-judgmental, psychologically safe environment that invites participants to embrace vulnerability and feel safe to engage in all activities from a place of truth, authenticity, and curiosity.
Coaching
We adopt a coaching approach by inviting self-reflection from the participants using powerful questions, instead of simply delivering theories and fixed strategies to apply them.
Group sharing
Participants build collective resilience by safely processing shared challenges and structural stressors together. This helps them develop safety, empathy, and a feeling that they’re not alone in their struggles.
Working on real cases
We transform theoretical concepts into practical approaches by applying them directly to the current, real-world academic pressures faced by your researchers.
Modern learning design and facilitation
In our trainings, the learning experience is the focus. It is shaped in a way that promotes goal-setting, learning, collaboration, reflection, application, and integration.
Journaling
This practice utilizes structured prompts to help participants organise and express their thoughts and build strong self-leadership through objective self-reflection.
Connection to the body
Researchers learn to read physical signals and tensions as high-value information to identify emotional states, including anxiety, stress and overwhelm, and help them prevent early signs of burnout before it impacts performance or health.
Meditation and Visualisation
We often use meditation/visualisation-based exercises to help participants land in the space, relax, and connect with certain situations with a more experiential and sensing rather that a pure rational lens.
